Setting Industry Standards in ASTM Committees

ASTM Standards Development led by Q-Lab's Experts

ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) serves as a global leader in the development of test standards that help to improve material quality and safety across nearly every industrial sector. Our team maintains a prolific presence within ASTM. By providing technical leadership, test experience, and decades of research data, Q-Lab helps develop the procedures used in accelerated weathering and cyclic corrosion testing worldwide, ensuring that laboratory testing can be conducted consistently and accurately.

ASTM Committees

ASTM D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials, and Applications is a technical committee within ASTM International dedicated to developing standards for paints, varnishes, lacquers, printing inks, and related coatings. Established in 1902, the committee manages more than 600 standards that address classification, chemical analysis, testing methods, and surface preparation for protective coatings. ASTM D01.27 on Accelerated Testing is responsible for many important weathering test methods including D5722, D609, D870, D1006, D1014, D1735, D2247, D4141, D4585, D4587, D5894, D6675, D6695, D7869, and D7356.

  2. ASTM D01.06 (Paints - International Coordination and US TAG to ISO/TC 35/SC9)
  3. ASTM D01.25 (Paints - Evaluation of Weathering Effects and Coating Defects)
  4. ASTM D01.27 (Paints - Accelerated Testing)

ASTM D08 is a technical committee within ASTM International focused on standards for Roofing and Waterproofing materials. Established in 1905, it oversees more than 180 standards, including test methods, specifications, and practices for materials such as bituminous membranes, steep-slope roofing, and related coatings.

  1. ASTM D08.09 (Roofing and Waterproofing – Liquid Applied Coatings for Roofing and Asphaltic Concrete Pavement)

ASTM D20 on Plastics is an ASTM International technical committee dedicated to developing standards, test methods, and specifications for polymeric materials. Its scope includes raw materials, compounded formulations, and finished products, addressing properties such as mechanical, thermal, optical, and environmental performance. The committee’s work is carried out through specialized subcommittees, including those focused on recycling and biobased materials. Important weathering test methods, primarily in ASTM D20.50 Durability of Plastics, include D1435, D2565, D4329, D4364, D618, D4459, D4674, D5071, D5208, D5272, and D6290.

  3. ASTM D20.50 (Plastics - Durability of Plastics)

ASTM G01 is the ASTM International committee focused on the Corrosion of Metals. Established in 1964, it develops standards, test methods, practices, and guides addressing both the mechanisms of corrosion and methods for corrosion prevention and protection. This committee is responsible for one of the most popular & widely used salt spray exposure tests, ASTM B117, as well as ASTM G85 (Prohesion).

  1. ASTM G01 (Corrosion)
  2. ASTM G01.04 (Corrosion of Metals in Natural Atmospheric and Aqueous Environments)

ASTM G03 on Weathering and Durability was established in 1965 to develop standards for evaluating how materials—such as plastics, paints, and coatings—degrade under natural and simulated environmental exposure. The committee maintains more than 36 standards focused on weathering, aging, and service life prediction. ASTM is unique among standards organizations for having a centralized Weathering committee with standards referenced by other industry committees. This committee manages popular accelerated standards in G03.03 Simulated and Controlled Exposuree Tests such as ASTM G151, G154, G155, and G224, as well as Natural and Environmental Exposure Tests in G03.02 like G7, G24, G50, G90, G179, G201, and G229.
