Special Projects Manager (Buckeye, AZ)

We are looking for a talented and highly organized Special Projects Manager who will report to the Global Director of Testing Services in Florida. This hands-on, technical management position will be the leader of our 8-person facility in Buckeye.

Your mission will be to provide leadership to our team, and manage the diverse needs of the facility. You will personally service tests and special projects with fast turnaround and new specimen mounting procedures/techniques. You will maintain our weathering equipment and data acquisition systems, and use your technical/science skills to discuss test results with our customers. You will also produce daily and monthly weather summary and capacity utilization reports. This is a technical position with plenty of hands-on plus some basic management responsibilities. You will need to enjoy doing both.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  Handle all aspects of “special projects” including:

            Design new test methods to achieve test objectives

            Check in test specimens upon arrival at test site

            Design and construct new mounting fixtures as needed

            Mount specimens in outdoor test field

            Analyze data and write lab reports

            Create and document new mounting/ test procedures

Provide billing summaries of material and labor costs to accounting department for invoicing

            Other tasks as deemed necessary or requested

 

2.  Operation of weather station

            Maintain weather sensors including cleaning, maintenance, repair, and calibration

            Service and maintain data acquisition system

            Produce daily solar radiation reports

            Summarize weather data into monthly summary reports

 

3. Evaluations and Measurements

            Inspect and evaluate specimens as needed

            Measure surface appearance properties using handheld equipment

            Handle inquiries from customers with questions about their test data

 

4. Quality System

            Administrate the ISO 17025 quality system locally (update records, maintain calibrations, etc.)

            Ensure implementation of quality control measures

 

5. Customer Service

            Discuss test options with customers and recommend test protocols

            Lead tours of the facility for visitors, explaining what we do and why

 

6. Management Reports and Duties

            Coordinate personnel as necessary

            Generate capacity and usage charts and tables for testing equipment

            Serve as our main contact for local vendors, suppliers, and government officials

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

BS in a hard science or engineering field

[AS degree acceptable if supplemented with at least 5 years employment in a similar role]

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

·         At least 5 years’ management experience in an engineering, scientific or technical area

·         Superb customer service and small team leadership/management skills

·         An innate love for science and technology

·         Strong project management skills with an extremely high attention to detail

·         Proficiency in MS Excel and MS Word, and basic computer skills

·         Fluency in English, both written and conversational

·         A sense of urgency, bias for action, and proven experience to work with difficult deadlines

·         Practical, results driven problem solving skills

Our materials test satellite facility located in Buckeye, AZ performs natural and artificial weathering tests to determine the outdoor exposure durability of a wide range of materials. Weathering damage causes billions of dollars of product damage each year, and we help our customers determine if their products will last outdoors.  We write test reports on the performance of these materials during their exposure. We test all types of products for ability to withstand outdoor degradation due to the weather. We use large weathering fixtures and frames to mount specimens for exposure, and we use various tools and other hardware to create special fixtures.

You will perform technical demonstrations to small audiences, consult with customers about their testing needs and respond to customer questions. Key Responsibilities for our Technical Sales Representatives

  • Pursue sales leads received from industry ads, trade shows, internet web inquiries and other sources
  • Engage in proactive outbound selling efforts via the telephone
  • Travel, when required, throughout the U.S. (and internationally, on occasion) to visit existing and new customers to educate, close sales, and build relationships
  • Must have the ability and desire to prospect for new customers, identify decision makers, and sell our products
  • Give technical presentations at seminars and symposiums.
  • Prepare quotations
  • Edit, manage, and maintain database of existing and potential customers (CRM system).
  • Meet established sales targets
  • Attend Trade Shows
  • Prepare reports of sales visits, trade shows, and seminars.
  • Coordinate and conduct hands-on technical training at customer site.
  • Follow-up with existing customers to confirm customer is satisfied with Q-Lab’s products and answer any technical questions.
  • Advise customers on types of equipment to purchase, considering such factors as costs, space availability, and intended end-use application.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of industrial sales experience (preferably in capital equipment)
  • Engineering or Science related degree preferred
  • 10%-15% of overnight travel in US and possible occasional international travel
  • Aptitude to understand, differentiate, and effectively sell technical products
  • Business acumen with critical problem solving skills
