New Developments in Testing Standards: Webinar Recap

Q-Lab's technical marketing team recently presented a webinar on New Developments in Testing Standards. The session covered a series of updates that have been made to standards covering general lab practices, xenon arc testing, UV fluorescent testing, and corrosion testing. A short summary is given below - more detail is given in the webinar presentation:

General Standards
  • ISO 4892-1 (General Lab Testing): Updated definitions, clarifies black panel temperature sensor requirements, and adds water delivery guidance.
  • CIE 241 (Solar Reference Spectra): Improved data precision and modeling for the "noon summer sun" solar reference table.
Xenon Arc Testing
  • ASTM G155 (General Weathering): Expanded scope, added ASTM D7869 cycles, and emphasized specimen repositioning.
  • ISO 23741 (Water Delivery): Introduced a standardized method to quantify water delivery in flat array and rotating rack xenon arc testers
  • SAE J2412 (Automotive Interiors): Added a defined irradiance set-point and suggests the optoinal use of window optical filters
  • ISO 105-B04 (Outdoor Fabrics): Clarifies spectral requirements clearly specify Daylight optical filters.
UV Flourescent Testing
  • ISO 4892-3 (General Weathering): Added high-irradiance cycles for UVA and UVB lamps and permitted insulated black panel (IBP) use.
  • SAE J2020 (Automotive): Improved guidance on lamp types, specimen repositioning, and black panel thermometers.
  • ISO 16053-2 (Wood Coatings): Adopted EN 927-6 test method as an ISO international standard.
  • ASTM G224 (UVC Testing): Developed by Q-Lab, this first-ever UVC testing standard includes realistic lower-dosage cycles.
  • IEC 60068-2-87: Introduced 15 UVC test "severities" (irradiance, duration, temperature) to simulate UVC exposure use cases.
Corrosion Testing
  • ISO 9227 (Continuous Corrosion): Allowed multiple steel grades for mass-loss coupons and simplified fog verification.
  • ISO 12944-6 (Corrosion of Coatings): Under revision with objective of improving panel scribing consistency.
